You see, a Saltspring is not really a freezing, wet, sticky-day kind of dress. Luckily we've had some beautiful weather here in Melbourne (I know, I'm shocked too) that has given me ample opportunity to wear my short Saltspring.
I was going to make the maxi version again but Leith convinced me the short version is more wearable and versatile. I have to agree - it is much easier to just knock around in this short version.
I don't have much to say from my last review, except I made the size 8, lengthened the skirt by 8cm and it was a joy to sew. I hand-stitched the hem, used Lara's fancy tool to turn the straps, and thoroughly enjoyed putting this together.
The fabric is Rachel De Thames from Liberty - I got it from Shaukat, and I mostly got it because it was named Rachel. I really love the print too - just thought it was cool that there was a Liberty print with my name in it - and spelt the same way!
After wearing my maxi version around a bit, I ended up buying a bandeau bra to wear with this version. It is a simple soft cloth bra that is just like a band. It doesn't offer any support but gives a bit of coverage.
I've been wearing this a lot to play with Little M - we're all on holidays at home together and it is so nice. We've just been pottering around, going on bike rides, napping, eating, and visiting friends. I have another week off, and Michael two more weeks off with our tiny lass. Happy times indeed.
I love the idea of buying fabric because it has your name on it (any excuse really!!) It's a great dress perfect for lazy days off.
ReplyDeleteThanks Robyn. Perfect lazy day dress - I love your version!
DeleteI think I need this pattern for hot summer days around home.
ReplyDeleteI think you do Susan!
DeleteIt is the best holiday just pottering around the house! This is a lovely dress. I haven't made this dress due to the bra issues (!!) so good to know what you've done.
ReplyDeleteA bandeau is the way to go - especially if you can't hack a strapless bra for long periods like me. I think you should make a Saltspring!
DeleteLooks like a great holiday dress. Lazy days at home over Christmas are the best aren't they - we've all been of work for a few weeks too (but not getting much sewing done!)
ReplyDeleteThey certainly are Gabrielle. Little M has been having amazing day time naps, so when I'm not napping too, I've actually been getting some sewing done. It is so lovely!
DeleteI love this dress, the style seems super easy to wear. And I adore Liberty prints...but I'm not buying any until I can actually sew something wearable.
ReplyDeleteI didn't buy any Liberty until last year - 3-4 years after I started sewing. I was too scared of it!
DeletePerfect summer dress Rachel. Our heat today is unbearable and I am wishing I had your dress to wear ...lawn is the best fabric for the heat. Little M is adorable and growing up! Enjoy the rest of your summer break.
ReplyDeleteThanks Maree. I have heard about the heat. Ironically it is freezing here and we have even blasted the heater. It is ridiculous. Little M is truly becoming a 'big girl' as she likes to tell us. I don't want her to get too big just yet….
DeleteVery pretty - a great summer dress! Enjoy your break.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great summer casual dress, and named after you as well! I need a dress exactly like that for up here ~ it is a hot one in Brisbane ... J
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Enjoy your break!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely dress - perfect for home days together & out - holidays are wonderful for enjoying the slow lane - nice work ;) - and I love finding things named after me (well, you know what I mean ;) )
