W-w-w-w-ashi Dress

Happy weekend to you all! Ours is drawing to an end here, but it has been a fun one.

Yesterday we had Little M's daycare open day. I volunteered at the cake stall and it was a beautifully warm day. So I wore a frock. A Made By Rae Washi frock.

I actually made this a while back, but for one reason or another I haven't worn it. I do like it, but I find it slightly constricting due to the wide elastic at the back, and the cotton very slightly rough.

I made a size M in organic cotton by Rashida Coleman-Haye. You can enter her name on etsy and find it easily. It was about $13/m. I would describe this as a nice quilting cotton. I haven't made a garment in quilting cotton since I learnt to sew, and I find it a little rough against the skin - more so because this dress is unlined.

I made a size M and added 5cm in length to the bodice. I also used an elastic casing with 3cm wide elastic at the back instead of the shirring. I regret this as I think it makes the front bodice too firm. Apart from that I made the dress as per instructions.

Piggie tails! Her first ones ever. Ridiculously gorgeous.
So there you have it. A Washi dress. I got a lot of lovely compliments yesterday, but the truth is that I don't feel that comfortable in it. I also feel like there is a slight pregnancy vibe to it. I think I look better with a bodice that is fitted to my natural waist, rather than this empire style. I also don't think I'll be going back to this type of cotton either - maybe I've spoilt myself after sewing so much Liberty Lawn? Mmmm... Liberty Lawn. So buttery and soft.

Pattern: Made By Rae Washi Dress
Fabric: Rashida Coleman-Haye organic cotton
Notions: 3cm wide elastic
Alterations: lengthened bodice by 5cm, changed shirring to elastic casing

  1. Cute photobombing! The fabric is a great pattern and I can see why you got loads of compliments. I agree, it is hard to go back to using quilting cotton for clothes after sewing with other fabrics :)

    1. Haha thanks! She loves getting in on the photos. We look at photos of her all day long - I think I'm bringing up a narcissist!

  2. I like it and the photo bombing! I also have some dress length pieces of quilting cotton but can't seem to get motivated to make them into dresses. You are not helping either :)

  3. Nawww! Best photobomb ever! The pattern of this cotton is so lovely though after the majesty of Liberty it must have been a shock. More Liberty I say!

  4. Very lovely. I too use quilting fabric for my clothes - as a former quilter I have quite a stash to use up!! I find it quite ok - but then i haven't had the good fortune to be spoiled by Tana Lawn. Perhaps I can acquire a new habit!! Cheers, Karen

  5. Your garments are so well-made! It's funny, but Rae and a few other indy designers recommend quilting cotton and while I know they're not all created equal, I can't imagine that it's all that comfortable, which your review supports. I guess you don't know unless you try! (Anna's Washi is 100% cotton and she was pleased with hers. I wonder if it's quilting weight.)

    1. Aw thank you! I don't think Anna's was quilting weight. I think it might have been lawn....?

  6. haha pigtails! cute...
The dress looks really good despite its non comfortability. The colour is great on you. I have been eyeing off the pattern but feel a bit funny in empire line thing too...
    Its a great print!

    1. Thanks! It is weird how much I don't want to wear it again.... Especially as I really wanted to make it in the first place. Ah well!

  7. That fabric is gorgeous! So funny that you say about the pregnancy vibe because I've seen a maternity version I loved and want to recreate next time round. But in saying that on you it doesn't look pregnancy at all. In fact it looks gorgeous!

  8. Love love love the print but I have to agree that the
pattern isn't the most flattering. Not on you specifically - just in general. I've often wondered if I was missing out on something with the multitudes of Washi dresses on the blogosphere but your post has confirmed that I can remove it from my maybe list of things to make! Ta!
