The Difficulties with 'Casual'

Okay, I have a confession to make. I don't wear jeans. I have a lovely pair, and used to wear them all the time, but haven't worn any for about 12 months.

This kind of makes more casual outings a little difficult for me.

I have this dilemma at present. I have a 30th Birthday Party to go to next weekend at the Birthday Boy's house. I've been instructed to wear something of a casual nature.

Michael and I had a conversation about what this is for me. Apparently (and correctly) Michael thinks I do slobbing around the house or glam girl in a pretty frock really well. Nothing in between.

I am sewing up Vogue 9668 in a red wool crepe and initially thought to wear that. It is too dressy. What should I wear????

I'm admiring Stitchy Witch's Jersey Cynthia Rowley Dress

I'm a bit put off though by most seamstress' comments that attaching the yoke to the bodice is really difficult.

I love the look though.

My other thought is to make a similar dress using the Burda Style Melissa bodice (very similar to the Jenny dress) with a basic gathered skirt on it.

Decisions!

What would you wear to a house-party for a 30th birthday? Any suggestions for what I could make? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

  1. I don't really do casual either. That dress is probably super dressy for my friends, but for me it's what I wear for casual!

Maybe a skirt and blouse? That's always more casual than a dress somehow. Especially with flat shoes. But I'm not much help - I struggle with casual also!

  2. Ahh, I do casual so well, anything other than jeans is dressed up for me, and I feel awkward lol

I would do nice pants and a fitted or semi fitted top maybe. Or a nice skirt and top.

  3. How about your gingham skirt with a t-shirt? (Either black or white and you could roll up the sleeves to give it a slightly 1950s look.) Or try making up the (she takes a deep breath) pedal pushers?!

  4. How bout your outfit from the Lady Grey post? It looks stylish but super comfy too!
Personally I don't have a lot of casual clothes. I have 2 pairs of jeans for the weekend and casual friday at work, but if I'm at home I'm generally found in my PJs... I can't help it, they're just so cosy.

  5. I think you should wear your 50's wrap blouse and vogue trousers. Add some funky or playful jewelry and I think it will be casual enough. I don't think you need jeans to be casual and you should wear outfits you're happy in.

    Thanks for the great posts.

  6. I think you should wear whatever you feel comfortable in. I've turned up to 'casual' parties before in full on glam. the people who have invited and know me pretty much expect it, whilst the others... well I don't really care if I come across a bit Miss. Haversham.

  7. Haha, even that 'casual' dress would be considered dressy by my group of friends! I don't worry too much about it anymore, the people I hang out with know I don't dress like that to "show them up" or anything (as the man at the train station called out to me...) though I guess with people you don't know at a wedding it's a little different.

  8. I'd wear a black jersey dress with some punchy accessories - a chunky red or aqua bracelet.

I agree with the others. I really dress to please myself, too. Wear what makes you feel good and happy!

  9. I don't do casual often, either! Wear what you feel pretty in. I liked Tilly's suggestion of your gingham skirt with a T-shirt... and now that I look at the date on this post, this comment is totally useless! Ah well, there's my two cents anyways :)
